Pickup Truck Plunges Off Dock in Southwest Harbor
SOUTHWEST HARBOR, Maine (WGME) – A driver survived a dramatic incident when their pickup truck apparently lost its brakes and plunged off a dock at Dysart’s Marina in Southwest Harbor on Thursday, falling 20 feet into the water below.

The Southwest Harbor Fire Department reported that the driver was able to quickly exit the vehicle and climb onto the dock, suffering only a minor cut on their hand.
The truck ended up upside down, with its front end resting on the mud at low tide and its rear against the dock. Crews deployed an absorbent boom to contain any potential fluid leaks from the vehicle.
“We were very surprised that he was able to self-extricate, it was low tide…he was able to get a door open before he was locked in the mud,” said Chief Tom Chisholm of the Southwest Harbor Fire Department. “He got out unscathed, and that’s really just a blessing. If a couple of different variables went wrong, it could have gone a whole different way,” said Ethan Harkins, the assistant manager of Dysart’s Great Harbor Marina.
Damage to the dock was minimal, and officials said they would be able to reuse most of it. A barge and crane were used to lift the truck from the water. The vehicle was then transported to the Manset Dock, where it was loaded onto a tow truck.
