Kia EV1 Targeting Indian Market as a Sub-Compact Electric SUV
Kia is reportedly working on an even smaller electric SUV, potentially called the EV1, following the reveal of the EV2 concept. This sub-compact EV is designed to be the brand’s most affordable electric SUV, with a possible concept debut at the next Kia EV day in February 2026 and a potential launch in the Indian market.
According to Kia CEO, Ho-Sung Song, the EV2 concept previews a product that will be the brand’s cheapest electric SUV. He also hinted at the possibility of an even smaller EV1. The EV2 measures between 4.10 and 4.20 meters in length, while the EV3 is 4.30 meters long. The Kia EV1 is expected to be under 4 meters, positioning it as a direct competitor to the Tata Punch EV and other sub-compact SUVs.

Kia is exploring various platform options for the EV1. They could utilize a low-cost version of the Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), which already underpins the EV4 and other global Kia EVs. Alternatively, they could adapt an existing internal combustion engine (ICE) platform to accommodate an electric battery. The company is already testing a small electric SUV with a Sonet body in India and could potentially use the Syros as a base for the new EV. Kia might also use the K1 platform, which underpins the Hyundai Inster EV, or even the same 42kWh and 49kWh battery packs as the Inster EV.
This move aligns with Kia’s strategy to expand its electric vehicle lineup in India, offering more accessible and affordable options to compete in the growing EV market.
