Mercedes-AMG is preparing to reveal a new all-electric supercar concept later this year, according to reports from Autocar. This prototype promises not only a striking design but also the potential to be the fastest vehicle in AMG’s history.
Details of this exciting new model were revealed as part of a larger article discussing the 21 new Mercedes vehicles expected to debut over the next two years. While new versions of the CLA and GLB models were mentioned, the supercar concept is the headline item. It will showcase AMG’s next generation of electric vehicles, following the performance versions of the EQE sedan and SUV, and the EQS saloon currently offered.
Early reports suggest the concept will be groundbreaking. An anonymous “high-ranking insider” told Autocar that the concept will “rewrite the term ‘electric performance.'” This new performance vehicle is AMG’s answer to Mercedes’s 620-mile EQXX concept. The system will also preview the sub-brand’s upcoming battery-powered drivetrain, intended for future electric versions of the GT four-door coupe and SUV.
“Where the EQXX aimed to go the furthest, this aims to go the fastest,” the source said. “It will be the fastest-accelerating car AMG has ever produced.”
This new setup is likely to include an axial-flux electric motor manufactured by Yasa, a Mercedes-owned company, and a next-generation battery, which may be a solid-state unit. The design is expected to be bold, drawing inspiration from the 2023 One-Eleven concept.
The prospect of an electric AMG supercar is an exciting development. AMG’s previous venture into this class, the record-breaking One, is certainly one of the most impressive vehicles of recent times. The $2.7 million One is powered by a hybrid-assisted 1.6-liter V-6 engine that generates over 1,000 horsepower, and it can accelerate from zero to 62 mph in under three seconds, with a top speed of 217 mph. If the new AMG concept makes it to production, enthusiasts can hope it will be available for purchase in the U.S. market, unlike the One.
