Mercedes-AMG Unveils Plans for a High-Performance Electric Supercar
Mercedes-AMG is preparing to redefine performance. According to recent reports, the German automaker’s high-performance sub-brand is set to reveal a new electric supercar concept later this year. This vehicle is more than just a design exercise; it’s expected to preview AMG’s next generation of electric vehicle technology and could become the fastest car in the brand’s history.
The initial news, which surfaced in a broad article detailing 21 new Mercedes models planned for release over the next two years, highlights the upcoming supercar as the most significant development. While new models like the CLA and GLB are intriguing, the concept car is anticipated to showcase AMG’s future in terms of powertrain innovation. Currently, AMG offers performance versions of the EQE sedan and SUV and the EQS saloon.
Details are still emerging, but early indications are promising. An unnamed source told Autocar that the concept will “rewrite the term ‘electric performance’.” This new model, designed to be AMG’s answer to the Mercedes EQXX concept, will also feature the sub-brand’s forthcoming battery-electric drivetrain. This technology is expected to eventually power electric versions of the GT four-door coupe and SUV.
“Where the EQXX aimed to go the furthest, this aims to go the fastest,” the source stated. “It will be the fastest-accelerating car AMG has ever produced.”
This new powertrain is likely to integrate an axial-flux electric motor, produced by Mercedes-owned Yasa, along with a next-generation battery, potentially using solid-state technology. The design is expected to be radical, with the 2023 One-Eleven concept serving as an inspiration.
The electric supercar’s potential follows in the footsteps of the AMG One, a record-breaking vehicle. This $2.7 million hybrid-assisted 1.6-liter V-6 engine car generated over 1,000 horsepower. It accelerated from zero to 62 mph in under three seconds and reached a top speed of 217 mph.
If the concept model enters production, there’s hope it will be accessible to consumers in the U.S., unlike the limited availability of the AMG One.
