BMW’s iX: A Top Contender in the Electric SUV Market
The electric SUV market is booming, and BMW’s iX is a standout. Combining practicality with zero tailpipe emissions, the iX has now undergone a facelift, with subtle improvements making an already impressive vehicle even better. I recently had the opportunity to drive the updated iX, and here’s what I found.

BMW, a pioneer in the SUV segment since the original X5 launched in 2001, entered the electric SUV arena with the iX. Designed to compete with rivals such as the Audi Q6 e-tron and Tesla Model X, the iX’s bold design and practical nature, combined with a sporty driving experience and high efficiency levels, have garnered strong reviews.
With this mid-life refresh, BMW aims to keep the iX at the forefront of the premium electric SUV category.
What’s New?
The most noticeable changes are to the exterior.

The front kidney grilles have been redesigned, and certain models boast an increase in electric range. BMW has opted for subtle updates overall. Exterior changes include new paint schemes, a redesigned kidney grille, and the now-standard ‘M Sport’ treatment across all models.
Notably, the entry-level xDrive 45 now has a 30% larger battery, a 94.8kWh unit, increasing its claimed electric range from 340 to 374 miles.
Performance and Range
I drove the top-of-the-line M70 xDrive variant, which offers supercar-like performance.

The M70 xDrive is equipped with a 109kWh battery pack and dual electric motors, generating 668bhp and 1,015Nm of torque. This setup allows the car to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 155mph.
BMW claims the M70 can travel between 321 and 366 miles on a single charge. It also comes with 195kW DC rapid charging as standard, enabling a charge from 10 to 80 percent in about 35 minutes.
Driving Experience
The iX provides an excellent driving experience.

On the road, the iX handles exceptionally well, with its four-wheel-drive system providing excellent traction, even on twisty roads. Acceleration is brisk and smooth due to the 668bhp output of the M70 xDrive variant.
Visibility is excellent, thanks to the extensive use of glass, making city driving easier despite its size. The elevated seating position provides a commanding view of the road, and the rear-wheel-steering system assists with tricky maneuvers.
Comfort is another strong point. The supportive seats are very comfortable on extended drives, and the electronically controlled shock absorbers smooth out the ride at higher speeds. The iX performs well as a long-distance cruiser.
Design and Interior
Design updates are subtle. The front features redesigned kidney grilles with vertical and horizontal lines; illuminated versions are an optional extra with the Iconic Glow package. Other changes include the front headlights, which feature ‘City Light Technology’ to illuminate the road in urban environments.
The side profile remains the same, with flush door handles and curved lines, while the rear showcases a gloss black diffuser and darkened taillights. The 22-inch M light-alloy wheels complete the exterior design.
Inside, the iX maintains its premium feel.

The interior is carried over from the previous model and includes a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen. My test car had an Alcantara dashboard, enhancing its ‘M Sport’ appeal. The controls for the screens are conveniently managed via a swivel wheel on the center console.
Up front, there is ample storage, including a split center armrest, two cup holders, a large glove box and deep door bins. The rear offers impressive headroom and legroom, alongside a completely flat floor, assisting in seating three across.
Boot space remains at 500 liters, increasing to 1,750 liters with the rear seats folded. This falls slightly behind competitors like the Mercedes EQE and Kia EV9.
Trim Levels and Pricing
The iX is offered in four distinct trim levels: xDrive 45 Sport M Sport xDrive 60 M Sport M70 xDrive
Prices start at £74,400 for the entry-level xDrive 45 Sport, which includes adaptive LED headlights, heated front seats and steering wheel, and a premium Harmon Kardon sound system as standard.
The flagship M70 xDrive, tested here, is priced at £113,300 and features 22-inch alloy wheels, red brake calipers, four-zone climate control, active steering, and adaptive air suspension.
It’s worth noting that all iX models are relatively expensive, costing more than the equivalent Audi Q6 e-tron.
Verdict
These updates have solidified the BMW iX’s position at the forefront of the premium electric SUV class. It’s a pleasure to drive and extremely fast in the M70 xDrive guise. The spacious interior oozes class, quality, and style, and the improved electric driving range makes it a very tempting proposition.
Its styling might not be to everyone’s taste, and its size could be intimidating to some, but there’s no denying that BMW has delivered a premium electric SUV.
