Volkswagen Readies ID.EVERY1, a Small, Affordable Electric City Car

Volkswagen is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) lineup with a new model aimed at the budget-conscious European market: the ID.EVERY1. Set to start at around €20,000 (approximately £17,000 or $21,600), this compact EV promises to deliver affordability without compromising the brand’s reputation for quality.

Designed to be slightly smaller than the popular VW Polo, the ID.EVERY1 is designed to offer similar interior space. While details are still emerging, the proposed specifications include a range of approximately 155 miles and a top speed of 80 mph (130 km/h).

Last month, Volkswagen offered a glimpse of its vision for this new EV with a series of teaser images. These images hinted at a more sporty and aggressive design direction for the ID.EVERY1, signaling the brand’s ambitions for the battery-powered passenger car.

The show car, officially dubbed the ID.EVERY1—though many are hoping for a more appealing name for the production version—boasts a distinctive design characterized by a boxy shape with flared arches. Measuring 3,880mm in length, it’s somewhat longer than the previous Up! model (3,600mm) and is designed to slot in between the upcoming ID.2all and the existing Polo.

The design features “animated” front and rear lights that “welcome” the user. Volkswagen has made it clear that the ID.EVERY1 is designed for practicality and ease of use. The lower front bumpers offer a “smile,” and the car sports large 19-inch wheels.

Inside, the ID.EVERY1 promises to elevate the game as it offers more interior space. The vehicle has room for four passengers and provides a luggage compartment volume of 305 liters.

Volkswagen design head, Andreas Mindt, states that a key design element is the slightly indented roof line. Though it’s a concept car, VW says the car will likely hit 80 mph (130 km/h) with a newly developed 70 kW (95hp) electric motor. The range will be at least 155 miles, or 250 kilometers.

The ID.EVERY1 hopes to establish itself in the affordable city car segment, which is currently dominated by models like the Fiat 500e, the Dacia Spring, and the Leapmotor T03. The car will focus on low-cost functionality while maintaining VW’s reputation for quality.

The ID.EVERY1 is envisioned to be built ‘in Europe for Europe.’ This launch is intended to kickstart a run of nine new models by 2027, including the production version of the ID.2all and updated versions of the ID.3, ID.4, and ID.5.

Beyond its affordable price, the ID.EVERY1 features are designed to stand out from other budget EVs. These features include a large central infotainment system with physical buttons. The two-spoke steering wheel offers multi-function controls. The front passenger side of the dash features dedicated “rail” allowing tablet or tray table integration.

The concept also includes a speaker system that can be clicked into the center console for use as a Bluetooth sound system. Inspired by Kia’s recent designs, the center console can also serve as an armrest or a stowage space for rear passengers.

The ID.EVERY1 aims to achieve the commercial success of the Polo with its attractive price, design, and modern interior, which presents a new audience to the brand.
