2025 Volvo EX40: A Familiar Face with a New Name
Volvo has revamped its naming strategy for its electric vehicle lineup, and the 2025 EX40 is the beneficiary of that change. Essentially, it’s the same vehicle as the outgoing XC40 Recharge, but with a new moniker to clearly identify it as an EV.
What’s New?
Beyond the name, there are a few updates for the 2025 model year. A Performance software pack is available for the twin-motor variant, increasing power output, and improving throttle response. There’s also a Black Edition appearance package, featuring unique black exterior trim and interior options. Finally, the top trim level is now called “Ultra,” replacing the former “Ultimate” designation.

Performance and Powertrain
The EX40 offers two powertrain options: a single-motor, rear-wheel-drive configuration with 248 horsepower, and a twin-motor, all-wheel-drive setup producing a robust 402 horsepower. During testing, the all-wheel-drive model reached 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. The ride is compliant, and the cabin is remarkably hushed, making for a comfortable cruising experience. The regenerative braking system offers convenient one-pedal driving.
Range and Charging
The EX40 shares its 79.0-kWh battery pack with the XC40 Recharge. Single Motor models are estimated to provide up to 293 miles of range. The Twin Motor model has an estimated range of 260 miles. The EX40 can utilize both DC fast-charging terminals and home chargers. In testing, a fast charger replenished the battery from 10% to 90% in 46 minutes.
Interior and Features
The EX40’s cabin retains the practical and stylish design of the XC40, with thoughtful storage solutions, comfortable seating, and ample space for passengers. The cargo area is unchanged, it can hold 23 carry-on suitcases with rear seats folded, and the front trunk (frunk) is perfect for storing charging cables. All EX40 models feature Volvo’s latest infotainment system developed with Google’s Android Automotive, which offers intuitive functionality, although some may find the on-screen buttons a bit small. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster comes standard.

Pricing and Trims
The 2025 EX40 is available in several trim levels:
- Single Motor Core: $53,795
- Twin Motor Core: $55,545
- Single Motor Plus: $56,595
- Twin Motor Plus: $58,345
- Single Motor Ultra: $60,295
- Twin Motor Ultra: $62,045
The Ultra trim is the top-tier offering, adding features like 20-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control, and a premium Harman/Kardon stereo system.

Conclusion
The 2025 Volvo EX40 offers a compelling package for those seeking a stylish, compact, and all-electric luxury SUV. The EX40’s quick acceleration, comfortable ride, and well-equipped interior make it a strong contender in a competitive segment. While the range might not match segment leaders like the Tesla Model Y, the EX40’s overall design and build quality are impressive.
