Volkswagen is expanding its electric vehicle (EV) lineup with the ID. Every1, a concept car that previews the upcoming ID.1. The ID. Every1 is a compact, five-door, four-seater hatch designed to be an affordable electric vehicle for the European market.

    Design and Features

The ID. Every1 is envisioned as a “20,000-euro Volkswagen from Europe for Europe.” At current exchange rates, this price translates to roughly $34,000, which, even with import and distribution costs, would place it competitively within the market. It would rival the BYD Dolphin Dynamic ($36,890) and GWM Ora (from $35,990) and significantly undercut other EVs like the Fiat 500e, Mercedes-Benz EQA, Mini Aceman, Polestar 2, Smart #1, Tesla Model 3, and Volvo EX30, which typically have starting prices in the $55,000 to $65,000 range.

Scheduled for a 2027 introduction, the ID.1 is one of nine new models planned by Volkswagen. Four of these models will be electric and based on the company’s MEB platform. A production version of the ID. 2all concept, unveiled in early 2023, is slated for launch in 2026 as the ID.2, with a price point around €25,000.

Both the ID.1 and ID.2 are part of Volkswagen’s new ‘Electric Urban Car Family,’ utilizing MEB-based front-wheel drive. The ID. Every1 concept draws inspiration from the VW up! city car. It’s just under 3.9 meters long, placing it between the up! (3.6m) and the current Polo (4.1m). It will feature a new front motor (specifications yet to be confirmed) and a small, low-cost lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, aiming for a driving range of 250km. The rear suspension utilizes a torsion beam design to maximize cargo space, offering a 305-liter boot capacity.

The interior design appears close to production-ready, with digital displays neatly integrated into a wrap-around dashboard.

While designed for Europe, the ID.1 is likely to be a strong consideration for the Australian market. A Volkswagen Group Australia spokesperson stated that Volkswagen is dedicated to electrification and will continue to explore opportunities for further electrified vehicles.
