    The 2007 Mercedes-AMG E63: A High-Performance Bargain Sport Sedan

Sport sedans represent some of the most captivating vehicles in the automotive world. These four-door machines skillfully blend practicality and comfort with potent engines and track-ready suspensions, offering a thrilling experience on both city streets and race circuits. Often, these are the cars you subtly convince your spouse are “family-friendly,” highlighting their “ample space” and “reasonable fuel economy” while privately reveling in their true capabilities.

In all seriousness, a well-executed sports sedan truly does offer the versatility to comfortably transport a family of five across town. For luxury models, this translates into an exceptional degree of comfort. A prime example is the 2007 Mercedes-AMG E63, a car that has become a luxurious bargain on the used market, and perhaps the next vehicle you’ll need to “sell” to your partner.

The data for this article came from Mercedes and other reliable sources to provide the most thorough and up-to-date information possible.

    Understated Performance and Impressive Power

The 2007 Mercedes-AMG E63 (W211) initially disappointed some enthusiasts. Its predecessor, the E55 AMG sedan, featured a supercharged 5.5-liter V8, which generated more mid-range torque. As such, some fans were skeptical of the naturally aspirated engine in the 2007 model. However, the E63 still packed serious punch. Its 6.2-liter V8 produced an impressive 507 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, all without forced induction. The engine also produced a glorious sound.

The hand-built engine is regarded as a masterpiece among AMG models, propelling the car from 0 to 60 mph in a swift 4.3 seconds, rapid for a vehicle weighing over 4,000 pounds. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automatic transmission. Moreover, the E63’s steering offers crisp feedback and weight, and its Airmatic suspension provides a comfortable ride on the streets while remaining adjustable with the push of a button. With the stability control disabled, this high-performance Mercedes could be easily controlled through corners, even feeling like a high-end drift car. As one editor from Car and Driver stated, “This is the best Mercedes sports sedan I’ve ever driven.”

    Elegant Facelift and Luxury Features

Mercedes gave the 2007 E63 a refreshed appearance. This was enhanced by a distinctive AMG body kit and large wheels. Inside, the E63’s supportive seats and high-quality materials signaled that you were sitting in genuine Mercedes luxury.

    • Engine: 6.2-liter V8
    • Transmission: 7-speed automatic
    • Horsepower: 507 hp
    • Torque: 465 lb-ft
    • Driveline: RWD
    • 0-60 mph: 4.3 seconds

A High-Performance Bargain Due to Depreciation

One of the best aspects of shopping for a used luxury sedan is depreciation. The 2007 Mercedes-AMG E63 had an original MSRP of $85,375. Today, used models can be found for between $15,000 and $20,000, thanks to depreciation, depending on condition and location. Considering the E63’s performance, power, and interior features, its low price point makes it a remarkable bargain. To save even more, some cars are priced around $12,000, although it is vital to inspect for any potential issues.

Some of the most common problems include:

    • Head gasket issues
    • Rear air suspension leaks
    • Airmatic pump issues
    • Cracked driveshaft flex discs
    • Electrical glitches

Additionally, owning a Mercedes-Benz can come with high maintenance costs. Therefore, a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic is highly recommended before purchasing any used E63.

Cutting-Edge Technology and Features, for Its Time

Although Mercedes-AMG is recognized for creating some of the fastest and most well-equipped models, things were a little different in 2007. Notably, the W211 E63’s interior seems a bit sparse compared to today’s standards. The E63 offered various tech-savvy features, including a panoramic sunroof, rear-side window blinds, a COMAND navigation system, and ventilated front seats. Other options included a power-operated trunk lid, rear parking sensors, a push-button start function, a rear-seat entertainment setup, and headlamp washers. These weren’t the most advanced features compared to the latest offerings, but they were considered cutting-edge for the time.

Some car lovers appreciate the 2007 E63’s simpler layout. While it might lack features like Apple CarPlay or an advanced premium audio system, this version of the E63 offered a visceral driving experience, allowing the driver to focus more on driving. After all, the Germans were used to driving on roads like the Autobahn, where road awareness is key.

The 2007 Mercedes-AMG E63 wasn’t only a driver’s car; it was practical as well. The performance-oriented car was available as a sedan or a wagon, which included jump seats in the cargo area that could fit two children. The wagon body style would be easier to sell to your spouse, but good luck finding one since fewer than 200 units were ever produced. Either way, this sports sedan is arguably one of the best in the market. So, if searching for an elegant, powerful four-door that can handle family duties and track days, the 2007 Mercedes-AMG E63 could be ideal.
