Honda’s New Electric SUV, the S7, Arrives in China

After months of anticipation, Honda has officially unveiled the production version of its all-electric SUV, the S7, exclusively for the Chinese market. While the S7 won’t be available in the U.S., it represents Honda’s push into the premium electric vehicle segment, offering a compelling alternative to competitors like the Tesla Model Y.

Designed to compete in the increasingly competitive EV market, the S7 is a product of Honda’s collaboration with Dongfeng. The Japanese automaker aims to position the S7 as a more refined and stylish option, differentiating it from the budget-friendly electric crossovers flooding the market.

    Powertrain and Performance

The S7 is built on a dedicated electric vehicle platform and comes equipped with an 89.8 kWh battery pack, offering a respectable range. Customers can choose between two configurations: a base model and a dual-motor setup.

The base model features a single electric motor, delivering 268 horsepower (200 kW) to the rear wheels and achieving a claimed range of 404 miles (650 km) on the Chinese CLTC cycle. For those seeking more performance, the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive version ups the power output to 469 hp (350 kW), enhancing acceleration. However, this upgrade reduces the range slightly to 385 miles (620 km).

The Honda S7’s interior is equipped with a 12.8-inch infotainment screen as its centerpiece.

    Design and Features

While the S7 retains familiar Honda design cues, it also introduces stylistic elements that make it stand out in China’s crowded automotive landscape. In terms of its overall dimensions, the S7 is similar in size to a compact SUV. It measures 4,750 mm (187.0 inches) in length, 1,930 mm (75.98 inches) in width, and 1,625 mm (64.02 inches) in height, with a wheelbase of 2,930 mm (115.4 inches).

Inside, the S7 boasts a modern and tech-focused cabin. Key features include a 12.8-inch portrait-oriented infotainment screen, a 9.9-inch digital instrument cluster, and camera-based side mirrors. Additional amenities include twin glass roof panels and an optional 16-speaker Bose sound system. These features contribute to the overall sense of refinement and luxury that Honda is aiming for.

    Pricing and Market Positioning

The Honda S7 is priced starting at ¥259,900, or about $35,800. This competitive price point positions the S7 as an attractive option within the premium electric SUV segment in China. The S7 is designed for drivers who want a blend of performance, range, and luxury, all at a competitive price.
