Lexus RZ Adds Shifts and Sounds with Refresh
Lexus is updating its all-electric RZ SUV, with the refreshed model slated to launch in the fall of 2025. The updates include performance enhancements, a new steer-by-wire system, and an “immersive sound” system that simulates gear shifts.
The updated RZ lineup will add an RZ 550e F Sport model and increase the vehicle’s range. The simulated shifting technology will sync with the immersive sound system to enhance the driving experience.
Lexus unveiled the updated RZ in Brussels, showcasing a fully redesigned battery-electric vehicle system. A larger battery pack now powers the SUV; the refreshed RZ packs a 76.96-kWh battery, up from the current 71.4-kWh battery.
This battery feeds a single electric motor in the RZ 350e, which delivers 221 hp. This represents a 20-hp increase over the current RZ 300e, the entry-level model in the U.S. market.
The all-wheel-drive, two-motor RZ 500e also utilizes the larger battery. Its dual electric drive modules generate 375 hp – a 67-hp increase over the current RZ 450e. The refreshed lineup also sees the introduction of a more powerful model under the RZ 550e F Sport guise, producing a robust 402 hp.
While these specifications are for the European market, Lexus has indicated that U.S. information will be confirmed at a later date. However, the power output is not expected to significantly change as the vehicle transitions to the U.S.
Manual Drive and Steer-by-Wire System
Alongside these performance upgrades, Lexus is introducing a “Manual Drive” system. This technology simulates gear shifting and works in conjunction with the sound enhancement system to create a more engaging driving experience. This is a first for Lexus, though similar systems are becoming more common in performance-oriented EVs.
The updated RZ will also feature the next generation of Lexus’s steer-by-wire system, which has been in development for some time. The updated RZ is scheduled to gradually start rolling out this fall.
With these updates, a price increase is anticipated. Thus, the current starting price of $43,975 could be adjusted.
