Mercedes-Benz Revives CLA to Challenge Tesla
In 2013, a memorable commercial during Super Bowl XLVII introduced the Mercedes-Benz CLA to a broad audience. The ad, featuring a young man tempted by a character reminiscent of Satan, highlighted the allure of the car, even though the car was relatively affordable. Now, with electric vehicle technology rapidly evolving, Mercedes-Benz is returning with a new CLA model designed, in part, to take on Tesla.

The all-new 2026 Mercedes-Benz CLA will serve as the brand’s new entry-level model, designed to be its most affordable offering. Despite its budget-friendly aim, the CLA exudes a luxurious aesthetic, borrowing design elements from more expensive Mercedes sedans. This includes features like flush door handles, front and rear LED light bars, and a prominent front grille with LED-illuminated stars.
One of the most significant changes is the platform on which the new CLA is built. Mercedes has designed it to accommodate both gas and electric powertrains.
Under the hood, the gas-powered CLA will feature a turbocharged 1.5-liter inline-4 hybrid engine, paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, a 27-hp electric motor, and a 1.3-kWh battery pack. However, Mercedes is placing significant emphasis on the electric version of the CLA, which will be offered in two variants: the CLA 250+ with EQ Technology and the CLA 350 4Matic with EQ Technology.

The CLA 250+ features a single motor that drives the rear wheels, producing 268 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque. The CLA 350 boasts a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup, delivering 349 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. Unlike Tesla, the new Mercedes models will use a rear-mounted two-speed transmission, which will provide a different driving experience, and, unlike Tesla, Mercedes claims a top range is around 492 miles on the WLTP cycle, and 800-volt electric architecture that supports DC fast charging at 325 kW.
Both the gas and electric CLA models feature impressive interiors, packed with technology and a long list of premium features. These include a 12.2-inch heads-up display and a 16-speaker Burmester sound system. The interior design is inspired by zen gardens. Standard features include a panoramic sunroof, an advanced AI assistant, and a new infotainment system that allows for over-the-air updates. An advanced Level 2 hands-free system will also be available after launch.

The dashboard is dominated by a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 14-inch infotainment screen. In addition, buyers can opt for a 14-inch passenger screen, called MBUX Supercreen, allowing front-seat passengers to stream movies or play video games.
Mercedes plans to launch the 2026 CLA first as an EV this fall. With the least expensive car in Merc’s lineup—the GLA crossover SUV—starting at $43,000, the CLA EV should provide a compelling alternative to Tesla’s $42,490 Model 3.
