Amazon has announced that its US delivery fleet now includes more than 20,000 Rivian Electric Delivery Vans (EDVs). This represents an increase of at least 5,000 vehicles since July 2024, demonstrating the rapid expansion of Amazon’s electric vehicle program.

Amazon and Rivian initially agreed in 2019 for Rivian to supply 100,000 electric delivery vans. The first vans were delivered and deployed in the US in 2022, and Amazon is aiming to have the full complement of vehicles on the road by the end of the decade.
With the growing number of EDVs in its US fleet, Amazon has delivered one billion packages using electric delivery vehicles. The recent announcement represents substantial progress for the company’s electrification goals. This milestone follows a temporary pause in Rivian’s EDV production for Amazon due to parts shortages.
In addition to Rivian vehicles, the e-commerce giant operates 15 other electric vehicle models globally. This includes electric cargo bikes and rickshaws. Amazon India, for example, partnered with electric mobility provider Gentari in August, granting subcontractors access to EVs, especially electric three-wheelers for last-mile deliveries. Moreover, Amazon introduced 300 Rivian electric delivery vans in Germany in 2023.
To support its large fleet of electric vehicles, Amazon has also significantly invested in charging infrastructure. According to a Bloomberg report in spring 2024, Amazon has become the largest private operator of charging infrastructure for EVs in the US. The company has installed over 17,000 chargers in around 120 warehouses across the US within just over two years. As of November 2024, the company reported 24,000 chargers across more than 150 delivery stations in the US.
Amazon remains a major investor in Rivian, holding approximately a 16% stake in the electric vehicle manufacturer. Originally, Rivian produced the EDV exclusively for Amazon. However, this exclusivity agreement ended in late 2023 due to lower-than-expected orders from the online retailer.
