Van Drivers Urged to Know Parking Laws to Avoid Fines
Van drivers across the UK are being reminded of parking regulations that could lead to hefty fines, especially given the often-larger size of their vehicles. While vans generally follow the same parking laws as cars, their dimensions can create obstructions, resulting in specific regulations. Automotive experts are highlighting key rules van drivers should know to avoid penalties.
Pavement Parking
As a general rule, vans should avoid parking on pavements unless signs indicate it’s allowed. However, Scotland has stricter laws, where pavement parking is illegal and can result in a fine of up to £100. This law also applies in London, where offenders might face a £130 fine.
Overnight Parking
When parking overnight, align with the direction of traffic flow unless in a designated bay. If parked on a road with a speed limit exceeding 30 mph, parking lights must be on. For vehicles with a maximum loaded weight over 2.5 tonnes, parking lights are mandatory on any road, regardless of speed.
Residential Zone Parking
Overnight parking of commercial vans in residential areas may have restrictions. Some local councils require permits for parking on residential roads. A common misunderstanding is that vans can park in a residential area while delivering or working at a nearby property, but a permit is required.
Parking Near Driveways, Junctions, or Access Points
Vans take up more space than cars. Ensure driveways, access points, pedestrian crossings, and spaces for specific users are not obstructed. Parking within 10 meters of a junction is prohibited because of dangerous blind spots.
Parking Heavy Vans on Grass Verges
Vans exceeding 7.5 tonnes are prohibited from parking on grass verges, except for essential loading and unloading, where the vehicle must not be left unattended.
John Wilmot, CEO of LeaseLoco.com, a van leasing comparison site, advised, “Van drivers must remember that their vehicles are larger which means they are subject to stricter regulations in some cases.” He stressed the importance of understanding the rules to avoid fines and obstruction of other road users, whether used for personal transport, delivery, or trades. He emphasized the need for extra care when parking overnight, particularly in high-speed or residential areas.
