A recent survey conducted by the AA has revealed substantial hesitancy among drivers regarding the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs). The poll indicates persistent misconceptions about EVs, prompting the AA to urge the government to launch a comprehensive information campaign to address these concerns.
The survey of 14,000 drivers found that approximately 22% stated they would never purchase an EV, even with the upcoming 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles. An additional 20% of respondents indicated they intended to buy a petrol or diesel car when replacing their current vehicle.
Even among the 52% of drivers who generally support the transition to EVs, anxieties linger regarding the complexity and fragmentation of the charging infrastructure. Many expressed concerns about receiving inadequate support from the government in navigating this evolving landscape. These drivers worry about being left to their own devices as the transition progresses.
The findings highlight the need for initiatives to tackle misinformation and assuage the fears of potential EV buyers. The AA emphasizes the importance of clear communication and practical solutions from the government to ensure a smoother and more widely accepted shift towards electric mobility.
