This is more than just a custom build; it’s a statement. A group of car enthusiasts in Poland have resurrected a Daihatsu Hijet van, infusing it with the raw energy of a Yamaha FZR600 motorcycle engine, resulting in a truly unusual, yet undeniably cool, machine.

This project, fittingly named ‘Kevin,’ started with a simple question (and perhaps a bit of automotive boredom): Why not combine a lightweight van with a potent motorcycle engine? The team at Nightride took a sixth-generation Daihatsu Hijet, a micro van that likely produced no more than 50 horsepower when new, and gave it a significant power upgrade. By transplanting a 90-horsepower Yamaha FZR600 engine, they created something unique. Mated directly to the rear axle, the motorcycle engine gives this van a whole new character.

One compromise? The conversion eliminated the van’s cargo space. As the builders themselves put it, the bike now takes up the entire cargo area. But for a vehicle designed to be fun, space seems to have been a secondary concern. The builders saw a different opportunity with this project, one that prioritizes driving enjoyment over practicality.

Apparently, laziness played a part in the project’s conception. Initially, the team considered an early Miata engine swap, but the motorcycle engine was easier to integrate into the van. While the custom kei van promises thrills, it’s not for the faint of heart regarding comfort. With unpadded metal seats and a presumed lack of effective rear suspension, the ride experience is raw. However, for those seeking a head-turning vehicle with a unique driving experience, the sacrifices seem well worth it.
