A Varnville man died Wednesday night in a single-vehicle crash in Beaufort County after his pickup truck left the road, overturned, and hit a tree. The collision occurred on River Road, a rural stretch located east of Yemassee.
Martin Bennett, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office. Master Trooper Brandon Bolt of the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) stated that the 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck, driven by Bennett, had left the left side of River Road, flipped, and struck a tree approximately one mile east of Yemassee town limits.
River Road has a speed limit of 55 mph and lacks streetlights. The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office reported that this incident marked the fourth traffic-related death on Beaufort County roadways so far this year.
