The Lexus GX and Toyota Land Cruiser represent the pinnacle of Toyota’s off-road prowess. While both SUVs share a reputation for durability and impressive capability, the 2024 models offer distinct approaches to the market.

The 2024 Lexus GX introduces a new generation, prioritizing luxury and sophistication alongside its inherent off-road talents. The 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser makes a comeback after a brief hiatus, sporting a refreshed design and a modern hybrid powertrain. But which one is the superior choice and which one should you buy?

    2024 Lexus GX

While the Land Cruiser boasts a more accessible starting price of $55,950, the Lexus GX, starting at $62,900, presents a compelling argument for its premium features and performance advantages. Here are five key reasons why the Lexus GX might be the better buy:

    Superior Engine Performance

The Lexus GX gains a significant advantage in the engine department. The 2024 GX is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine, generating 349 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque. The Land Cruiser utilizes a 2.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder hybrid powertrain with two electric motors, producing 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque. Though both engines offer impressive acceleration, the GX’s V6 provides a noticeable edge in power delivery. This will make a difference in the enjoyment of the driving experience. It also means a better towing capacity of up to 9,096 pounds, depending on the trim, compared to the Land Cruiser’s 6,000-pound maximum. This extra towing capacity enhances the GX’s overall versatility and performance.

    Enhanced Cargo Capacity

Beyond its superior towing capacity, the Lexus GX offers more cargo space in certain configurations. The three-row version of the GX provides a maximum cargo capacity of 76.9 cubic feet, while the two-row configuration boasts an impressive 90.5 cubic feet. In contrast, the Land Cruiser maxes out at 82.2 cubic feet. While the three-row GX sacrifices some cargo space in favor of extra seating, the two-row version provides more room than the Land Cruiser for all your gear.

    A More Refined Interior

The Lexus GX elevates the driving experience with a more upscale and sophisticated interior. The cabin features premium trims, including available Nappa leather and wood accents and the Overtrail trims are both durable and attractive. Furthermore, the GX incorporates a standard 14-inch infotainment touchscreen. While the Land Cruiser’s interior is attractive, it lacks the elegance and premium features found in the GX, such as massaging seats. Additionally, the Land Cruiser offers only an 8-inch touchscreen as standard, with a 12.3-inch display available.

    Enhanced Seating Flexibility

For those with larger families or those who frequently transport passengers, the GX offers superior seating flexibility. The GX is available in either two-row or three-row configurations. The three-row option allows buyers to choose between a second-row bench seat or captain’s chairs, providing the versatility to accommodate a full complement of passengers. The Toyota Land Cruiser, however, is strictly a five-seater with no third-row option. The third row of the GX is suitable for children and adults. The second row offers more spacious seating than the Land Cruiser, providing a more comfortable ride for all passengers.

    Better Ground Clearance

Both SUVs are designed for off-road adventures. Ground clearance is a crucial factor in tackling challenging terrain. The GX demonstrates its off-road prowess, particularly with its Overtrail trim. The Premium and Luxury trims offer a respectable 8.66 inches of ground clearance, just shy of the Land Cruiser’s 8.7 inches. However, the Overtrail trim boasts a significantly higher 9.84 inches of ground clearance, making it the best choice if you are looking to adventure through difficult terrain.

    Conclusion

Although the Toyota Land Cruiser presents a lower price point, the Lexus GX comes out ahead as a premium SUV. Given its blend of cargo capacity, and passenger flexibility, its more refined and elegant interior, its higher ground clearance, and the more powerful engine, the GX makes a strong case for those who appreciate value and luxury.
