ACT’s New Tool: Electric vs. Petrol Vehicle Costs
The Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is making it easier for residents to weigh the financial benefits of electric vehicles (EVs).
The ACT government has launched a new online tool designed to help people compare the total cost of owning different cars — specifically, electric, petrol, and diesel models.

This tool will be critical as Canberrans increasingly embrace EVs. The ACT is leading the country in the adoption of Zero Emissions Vehicles (ZEVs). Today, around 20% of new vehicle purchases in Canberra are electric, and ZEVs now represent over 1% of all registered vehicles in the ACT.
While the initial price of an EV might be higher, the overall cost of owning one over five years could be similar to, or even cheaper than, owning a petrol or diesel car.
The tool is easy to use and allows comparisons. It allows users to input:
- Vehicle make and model.
- Body type (hatchback, sedan, etc.).
- Fuel type (petrol, diesel, or electric).
- Average kilometers driven per year.
- Annual fuel expenses.
The tool also considers upcoming vehicles and reflects ACT-specific financial benefits.
Canberra provides various financial incentives for households and businesses, not available for petrol/diesel options.
