Airstream, the iconic maker of aluminum travel trailers, has entered the electric age with the Basecamp Xe. Based on the regular Basecamp model, the Xe integrates a battery pack and solar panels to power the trailer’s amenities. However, this initial offering doesn’t include electric motors to assist the towing vehicle. This sets it apart from more ambitious concepts, like the eStream showcased in 2022, which boasted a larger battery and powered wheels.
Basecamp Xe: Features and Specs
The Basecamp Xe features a 10.3-kWh Battle Born lithium battery pack that powers a fully inverted 30-amp electrical system. It also includes 600 watts of solar panels, with an option to upgrade to 900W, and a 3000W inverter. For situations where solar or battery power isn’t enough, a 20-pound propane tank can be used to heat water or the trailer itself, thanks to the Truma Combi Eco Plus System, which can run on electricity, propane, or both.
The trailer measures 20 feet in length, has one axle, and can accommodate up to four people in a dedicated sleeping area. The dinette can also convert into additional sleeping space. A wet bath is included with a shower, sink, and toilet. Cooking is handled by a removable induction stove. Optional features include a composting toilet, microwave, air conditioner, and a heater.
