Alpine Unveils A390 Electric Crossover to Challenge Premium EV Rivals
Alpine, Renault’s premium sports car brand, has revealed its new A390 electric crossover, designed to compete with established rivals in the premium EV segment. The A390 expands Alpine’s lineup to three models, joining the A110 sports car and A290 hatchback.
The A390’s naming convention follows Alpine’s terminology, where ‘3’ indicates a compact midsize model and ’90’ signifies a more practical body shape. Orders for the vehicle will open in November, with deliveries expected to start early in 2026. Prices are anticipated to range from €65,000 for the GT model to €76,000 for the high-performance GTS variant.
Key Features and Specifications
The A390 is built on Renault’s AmpR Medium electric platform, upgraded to enhance its sporting appeal. A key feature is its three electric motors configuration – one at the front axle and two at the rear – providing all-wheel-drive capability and unique torque vectoring. This setup enables the GTS model to produce 470 hp and accelerate from 0 to 100 kph in 3.9 seconds.
Design-wise, the A390 boasts an ‘A110-inspired’ coupe shape with distinctive features such as thin light bars across the front and rear bodywork. The ‘bonnet blade’ design directs air over the hood to improve aerodynamic performance. The illuminated triangular motif, referencing the Alps, creates a unique lighting signature called ‘cosmic dust.’
Interior and Technology
Inside, the A390 features two 12-inch displays for driver information and infotainment, running on Android Automotive OS with Google Automotive Services integration. The vehicle offers a trunk space of 532 liters, comparable to the Porsche Macan EV’s 540 liters. The GTS model comes equipped with Nappa leather rear seats, emphasizing the car’s premium interior.
Production and Market Positioning
The A390 will be manufactured at Alpine’s Dieppe facility in France, which has been upgraded for electric vehicle production. The supply chain is localized, with batteries supplied by French cell manufacturer Verkor and electric motors from Renault’s Cleon plant. Alpine has identified key rivals including the Porsche Macan, Tesla Model Y, and Audi Q4 Sportback E-tron.
The A390 represents Alpine’s commitment to expanding its electric vehicle lineup while maintaining its sports car heritage in a crossover format. While initially planned for the U.S. market, its launch there has been postponed due to rising tariffs and low EV demand.
