Amazon’s electric vehicle (EV) fleet, built by Rivian, has reached a significant milestone, surpassing 20,000 delivery vans deployed across the United States. This expansion marks a notable increase from the 15,000 vans reported at the beginning of August.
This achievement highlights the ongoing collaboration between Amazon and Rivian, stemming from a 2019 agreement to introduce 100,000 electric delivery vehicles by 2030. The initial Amazon-branded EVs began deliveries in the summer of 2022. Over the last four months, Rivian has delivered approximately 5,000 additional vans to Amazon.
The Rivian-made vans have already played a crucial role, delivering over one billion packages for Amazon this year. To support this large fleet, Amazon has installed over 17,000 chargers across more than 120 delivery centers nationwide, solidifying its position as the largest private charging operator.
While the vast majority of these electric delivery vehicles operate within the United States, a small number, roughly 300, have been deployed in Germany. These vans are delivering parcels in major U.S. cities, including Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Las Vegas, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, Portland, San Diego, and Seattle.
Rivian’s commitment extends beyond its agreement with Amazon. The company has since opened up the sale of its Commercial Van, now known as the RCV, to other businesses. AT&T is testing the RCVs and R1 EVs, and Canada Post has commissioned custom-made delivery vans based on the Rivian ECV.
With the 2030 deadline approaching, Rivian appears to be on track to meet its commitments, maintaining a production pace that has delivered approximately 700 units a month over the last two and a half years, according to a previous email from InsideEVs. The company previously stated it remains on track to deliver on its EDV commitments.
