Australia May Scrap Luxury Car Tax in Trade Deal with EU

Australian luxury car buyers may soon see price reductions on premium vehicles as the government contemplates eliminating the contentious Luxury Car Tax (LCT) as part of ongoing trade negotiations with the European Union. The LCT, currently set at 33% on vehicle values exceeding $80,567 (or $91,387 for fuel-efficient models), has been a point of contention since its introduction in 2001 to protect Australia’s then-nascent car manufacturing industry. With local production having ceased by 2017, the tax is now viewed by many as outdated.

The Albanese Government is reportedly weighing the removal of the LCT to secure improved access for Australian agricultural exports into the European market. This move could make European vehicles more competitive in Australia, particularly as the continent struggles with an influx of affordable Chinese-made electric vehicles (EVs) that have impacted European EV sales and prompted manufacturers like Volkswagen and Audi to close plants.

If implemented, the removal of the LCT could lead to significant price reductions for various vehicles, extending beyond luxury brands to mainstream models such as the Toyota Prado and Hyundai Palisade, which have been affected by rising automotive prices. Government data indicates that a substantial portion of LCT revenue comes from Toyota sales, highlighting the tax’s broad impact.

However, the potential benefits of scrapping the LCT may be partially offset by the impending New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES), set to take effect on July 1. The NVES will penalize manufacturers whose fleets exceed carbon emission targets, potentially leading to higher vehicle prices if companies pass on the fines to consumers.

While the LCT’s removal has been welcomed by industry observers, its actual impact on car prices will depend on how manufacturers adapt to the changing regulatory landscape. Nonetheless, the possible elimination of a tax that has been debated for over two decades could mark a significant shift in Australia’s automotive market, potentially making premium vehicles more accessible to a broader range of buyers.
