The Basel City Cantonal Police in Switzerland is expanding its electric vehicle fleet, moving away from traditional combustion engine vehicles.

The department recently put a Mercedes eVito into service as a patrol vehicle, replacing a VW T 6.1. This is the first of several identical electric models that will be replacing other VW vans as part of the normal replacement cycle.
Their motorbike fleet will also be getting an electric boost with the addition of Zero DSR/X motorcycles. Police officials stated that these electric motorcycles will be used for regular patrol duties and at major events.
Furthermore, the cantonal police announced that a Skoda Enyaq will replace a Skoda Octavia stationed in Bettingen. According to the department, the requirements for a service vehicle in Bettingen differ significantly from those in the city, particularly concerning ground clearance, hence the selection of the Skoda Enyaq.
The Basel police gained international attention in 2019 when they introduced seven Teslas into service. Just last month, the department announced that the Teslas would remain in service longer than initially planned because the electric cars have proven more durable in police operations than initially anticipated. The Basel police department operates approximately 200 vehicles, including the seven Teslas, and eight Nissan Leafs that joined the fleet three years ago. Only one of the Nissan Leafs is currently in police livery.
