Best Used Cars with All-Wheel Drive

All-wheel drive (AWD) is a highly desirable feature in vehicles, providing increased peace of mind and enhanced performance, especially when combined with all-purpose tires. While all-wheel drive was once a rare option, it has become much more prevalent over the past two decades, and carmakers have expanded their AWD offerings to existing models and introduced new ones. Here are some of the best used cars that offer all-wheel drive, perfect for various driving needs.

Luxury: BMW 3 and 4 Series

BMW’s 3 Series sedans and 4 Series coupes are renowned for their engaging handling and sporty luxury. The 3 Series has offered all-wheel drive in the United States since the mid-1980s, starting with the 325ix. The 4 Series coupes have also offered AWD since their introduction in 2014.

The most commonly found 3 Series and 4 Series models on the used market are contemporary trims equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, delivering around 200 horsepower. If you’re looking for more power, the 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine found in higher trims can provide up to 320 horsepower, although this might come with a trade-off in condition or higher mileage within the same price range.

    Electric: Tesla Model 3

Even after eight years, the Tesla Model 3’s interior feels futuristic. With a minimalist dashboard featuring a large central screen, this compact electric sedan embodies the Tesla vision. Some adjustment is needed to get used to the Model 3’s unique controls, but they don’t detract from the overall driving experience.

All-wheel-drive trims have been available since the 2018 model year. Distinguishing between the AWD and rear-wheel-drive versions can be challenging, as there’s no obvious external difference beyond a small badge.

    Compact: Subaru Impreza

The Subaru Impreza, one of the earliest Japanese sedans with all-wheel drive, gained recognition through its motorsport success. The last decade’s Imprezas are available in sedan and hatchback body styles, powered by either a 2.0-liter or a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, both offering moderate power.

Though the Impreza doesn’t offer luxury features, its combination of all-wheel drive and practical utility makes it excellent for daily driving. Consider models with low mileage for the best value.

    Compact: Mazda 3

In 2019, Mazda began offering AWD on its compact Mazda 3. Sedan and five-door hatchback body styles are available, along with two engine options – both 2.5-liter four-cylinders. The upgrade engine is turbocharged and produces 250 horsepower (starting in 2021), but the base engine is also adequate. The Mazda 3 stands out with its premium interior materials and sporty driving dynamics.

The Mazda 3’s stylish design is hard to ignore, although its interior space may be limited compared to some competitors. The hatchback body style provides seven additional cubic feet of cargo space compared to the sedan, which is worth considering if space is a priority.

    Midsize: Nissan Altima

The Nissan Altima is among the midsize sedans featuring all-wheel drive, although the Toyota Camry and Kia K5, which also offer this feature, are less common. Nissan implemented AWD on the Altima starting with its 2019 redesign. The drivetrain is paired with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that offers impressive efficiency, exceeding the EPA’s combined estimate of 30 mpg by 4 mpg in Edmunds’ testing.

The Altima includes a strong tech package, featuring a lane-centering system and adaptive cruise control that can bring the car to a complete stop in traffic, enhancing safety and convenience.
