BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA: A Canvas on Wheels

The BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA represents a remarkable fusion of technological innovation and artistic expression. This unique concept car showcases BMW’s pioneering color-changing exterior technology, harmoniously blended with the vibrant aesthetic of South African Ndebele artist Esther Mahlangu.

This special project presents the latest evolution of BMW’s color-change technology, utilizing electrically animated E Ink film segments to bring Mahlangu’s iconic geometric patterns to life on the car’s surface. It highlights the brand’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive design and its engagement with global culture.

An Homage to BMW’s Art Car Heritage

The i5 Flow NOSTOKANA pays tribute to the history of BMW Art Cars, a tradition highlighting artistic collaborations. In 1991, Esther Mahlangu designed the 12th BMW Art Car, a BMW 525i, becoming the first woman and first African artist to contribute to the series.

“Her art inspired me years ago, when dynamic color changes on the body of a BMW were nothing more than an initial idea,” says Stella Clarke, a Research Engineer in Open Innovations at the BMW Group.

Clarke further explained that even the initial pitch deck included an interior shot of Mahlangu’s Art Car. “Realizing this idea now, working with her, and seeing a thought in her head become a reality is absolutely incredible,” she added.

    Ndebele Artistry and Technological Innovation

Mahlangu’s Ndebele paintings, traditionally used to signify important cultural events and celebrations, feature distinctive colors and geometric patterns. These designs, with their inherent visual dynamism, are perfectly suited to showcase BMW’s innovative flow technology on the i5.

The name “NOSTOKANA” adds a personal touch, referring to Esther Mahlangu’s first son, reflecting the Ndebele cultural practice where mothers are known by their firstborn son’s name. This integration emphasizes the deep connection between the artist, her heritage, and the innovative car design.

    Color Change at Your Fingertips

BMW’s color-change technology builds on the principles of electrophoresis, similar to the technology used in e-readers. The surface of the car is coated with millions of microcapsules, each the width of a human hair. These microcapsules hold white and black pigments. An electrical impulse is used to bring the desired pigment to the surface, thus changing the color.

This technology offers functional benefits beyond visual appeal. For example, lighter colors reflect more sunlight, reducing heat absorption and the need for air conditioning. Darker colors absorb more heat, optimizing climate control in cooler conditions. This adaptability enhances the vehicle’s energy efficiency.

E Ink Technology and Evolving Capabilities

The BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA utilizes 1,349 individually controllable film segments, which extend over the vehicle’s sides, roof, hood, trunk, and rims. Each element allows the creation of complex patterns, with dynamic color changes that reflect Mahlangu’s artistry.

In 2023, the BMW i Vision Dee showcased this development with up to 32 colors on 240 independently manageable E Ink film segments, paving the way for even more advanced applications.

“Curiosity drives me. It all starts with that,” says Clarke, emphasizing the importance of innovation driven by curiosity.

The Synthesis of Art, Science, and New Possibilities

With the BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA, technology transcends its functional role to embrace art, transforming the car into a form of expression. Clarke highlights the synergy: “Technology is key. You can develop something magical with it. For me, magic always goes hand in hand with a touch of disbelief or astonishment. You question how the trick works.”

The ultimate objective is to develop the film segments to the point where changing a BMW’s color becomes as effortless as changing an outfit. The i5 Flow NOSTOKANA is currently a one-off, but further advancements could lead to potential series production, making this innovative capability widely accessible.
