BMW X3 Review: Luxury SUV Falls Short in Interior Quality

The 2025 BMW X3’s luxury SUV credentials are undermined by its subpar interior quality, which is surprisingly akin to budget-brand vehicles. The plastic trim throughout the cabin feels cheap, thin, and hollow, a stark contrast to what one would expect from a luxury marque. Even the BMW’s signature ‘crystal-like’ clear plastic trim, which changes color with ambient lighting, appears as nothing more than flimsy plastic. The air vents’ unusual design, combining touch-sensitive sliders with directional control knobs, adds to the overall sense of mediocrity.

The driving position is another significant issue, with the steering wheel feeling comically low and thick, making it difficult to grasp properly. This is particularly problematic for drivers with smaller hands. The seats, positioned oddly high with a steep rake, create an uncomfortable driving posture. While there’s ample headroom thanks to the panoramic moonroof, rear-seat legroom is severely limited, especially when front occupants are over 5’9″.

    Performance Variations

The 2025 X3 comes in two variants: the X3 30 xDrive and the X3 M50 xDrive. The former features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 255 horsepower and 295 pounds-feet of torque. In contrast, the X3 M50 xDrive boasts a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six-cylinder engine, delivering 393 hp and 428 pounds-feet of torque. BMW claims the M50 can accelerate from 0-60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, significantly outperforming the X3 30’s 6-second flat time.

    Driving Dynamics

Dynamically, the X3 M50 is a standout, offering quick and responsive handling with a well-balanced ride. The inline-six engine’s character is engaging, encouraging drivers to push the vehicle further. Despite its performance capabilities, the overall driving experience is marred by the vehicle’s interior shortcomings and awkward ergonomics.

In conclusion, while the X3 M50 excels in performance, the overall package is compromised by the subpar interior and poor design choices. For a luxury SUV, these are significant drawbacks that detract from the driving experience.
