Expanding Electric Vehicle Charging Network in Brighton & Hove

The Brighton & Hove City Council has launched a consultation to gather public views on the expansion of the electric vehicle (EV) charging network in the city. The consultation, which runs until August 10, 2025, aims to shape the future of EV travel in Brighton & Hove over the next 15 years.

The city is set to receive £2.8 million from the Department for Transport’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) Fund to support the expansion. The funding will enable the installation of over 7,000 new EV chargepoints by 2040, including:

    • Over 6,000 lamppost chargepoints (up to 8kW)
    • 1,000 fast chargepoints (between 8kW and 50kW)
    • 200+ rapid and ultra-rapid chargepoints (50kW and above)
    • 2 flagship ultra-rapid EV hubs

Of these, 1,650 new chargepoints are expected to be installed within the next three years, adding to the existing network of 500 chargepoints.

Councillor Trevor Muten, Cabinet member for Transport and City Infrastructure, emphasized the importance of public input, stating: “With more than 7,000 new chargepoints planned for the next 15 years, and the price of EV cars and vans soon expected to become much more affordable, it’s crucial we listen to residents and businesses.”

The consultation is open to all, whether they are current EV owners, considering purchasing an EV, or simply have views on the future of electric vehicles in the city. The feedback collected will be vital in determining how to expand the EV network effectively and support residents in making the switch to low-carbon transport.

For more information and to participate in the consultation, residents are encouraged to visit the Brighton & Hove City Council website before the deadline on August 10, 2025.
