BYD Sealion 7 Surpasses Tesla Model Y as Top-Selling Electric Vehicle in April
The BYD Sealion 7 emerged as the best-selling electric vehicle in April, registering 743 units sold in its third month on the market. This achievement comfortably outpaced its direct competitor, the Tesla Model Y, which recorded only 280 sales during the same period.

Tesla Australia responded to the sales figures, stating that they expect sales to normalize in May with the commencement of deliveries for the heavily updated version of the Model Y. Despite April’s slump, the Tesla Model Y remains the most popular EV in Australia year-to-date, with a total of 3394 deliveries.
Other electric midsized SUVs in the market saw relatively disappointing sales, with most selling fewer than 100 units in April. Notable sales figures include the Toyota bZ4X (89 units), Volkswagen ID.4 (57), Leapmotor C10 (56), Hyundai Ioniq 5 (46), Subaru Solterra (25), Skoda Enyaq (25), and Ford Mustang Mach-E (24).
In a positive note for Polestar Australia, the new Polestar 4 contender recorded 124 registrations, outselling other models in the range from the Swedish EV maker. The Polestar 2 sedan shifted 56 units, while the Porsche Macan-rivalling Polestar 3 sold 22 units.
As the electric vehicle market continues to evolve, the BYD Sealion 7’s success in April highlights the growing competition for Tesla’s dominance. With new models and updates entering the market, consumer choices are expanding, potentially impacting future sales figures for established brands like Tesla.
