BYD’s Affordable Electric Challenger
The BYD Dolphin Surf is making waves in the European electric vehicle market as a budget-friendly option that balances affordability with practicality. While Volkswagen is still preparing its ID.2 model priced around €25,000, BYD is already making its mark with the Dolphin Surf.
This compact EV stands out with its mature feel despite its urban runabout design. Measuring 3.99 meters in length with a 2.50-meter wheelbase, it comfortably seats four adults, unlike some micro-cars in its class. The driving experience is generally positive, with precise steering and responsive brakes. However, the narrow track and small wheels can make it feel somewhat nervous on uneven terrain, and it struggles with larger potholes.
BYD offers two electric motor options for the Dolphin Surf: a base model with 65 kW/88 hp and a more powerful variant delivering 115 kW/156 hp. While the more powerful version is livelier, both models top out at 150 km/h, which is typical for electric vehicles but might be a letdown for drivers accustomed to combustion engines.
The key differentiator lies in the battery options. The base model features LFP cells with a 30 kWh capacity, offering 220 standard kilometers of range but suffering from slow DC charging at a maximum of 65 kW. The more expensive variant (€26,990+) boasts a 43.2 kWh battery, promising 322 kilometers of range and making it suitable as a commuter or second car.
Inside, the Dolphin Surf surprises with its spaciousness. The boot offers 308 to 1,037 liters of storage, and the interior includes features like a rotating touchscreen, digital key for mobile devices, climate control, and various driver assistance systems in higher trims. However, the budget-conscious design is evident in the use of cost-cutting materials that may feel cheap to some buyers.
While not perfect, with issues like mediocre charging performance, the BYD Dolphin Surf offers a compelling package for its price. It’s not the cheapest EV nor the best in its class, but its overall ambience and equipment level surpass many competitors. For those familiar with the VW Polo, the Dolphin Surf could be an attractive alternative, potentially making it a significant player in the European market.
The BYD Dolphin Surf presents a viable option for budget-conscious buyers looking for a practical electric vehicle, despite some compromises in charging performance and material quality.
