BYD has introduced its Super e-Platform, a groundbreaking electric car architecture poised to redefine the electric vehicle landscape. The platform is built around the newest iteration of BYD’s lithium-iron-phosphate Blade battery, promising charging speeds of up to 1000kW.

Showcased in the refreshed Han L saloon and Tang L SUV, scheduled for delivery in China later this year, the Super e-Platform also incorporates a new generation of high-performance electric motors. The dual-motor configuration is set to deliver an astounding 1084bhp.

The newly developed battery within the Super e-Platform is termed a ‘flash-charge’ battery. While BYD has yet to disclose its capacity or weight, the company claims it can achieve a 10C charging multiplier, allowing a theoretical full charge in a mere six minutes. Supporting this, the system boasts a charging voltage of up to 1000V and a maximum current of 1000A, enabling a 1MW (megawatt) charging power, exceeding the capabilities of the fastest-charging EVs currently available.

During testing, the new battery maintained high charging power levels throughout the charging process, reaching up to 600kW even when at a 90% state of charge. To facilitate this rapid charging, BYD has developed a new 1000kW supercharger. According to BYD, this supercharger enables the updated Han L and Tang L to add up to 249 miles of range in just five minutes under ideal conditions. This surpasses the 500kW peak power of Tesla’s latest V4 Supercharger.

To support the rollout of its new battery technology, BYD plans to erect over 4000 supercharging stations across China. Beyond charging advancements, the Super e-Platform incorporates a new in-house-developed electric motor, claimed by BYD to operate at up to 30,511rpm, making it the highest-revving mass-produced electric motor to date. This is the first to exceed 30,000rpm in large-scale production.

The motor’s peak output is 778bhp, with a power density of 22bhp per kg. In combination with a smaller front electric motor developing 308bhp, the four-wheel-drive Han L and Tang L models will generate a combined 1084bhp. This is projected to enable respective 0-62mph times of 2.7 seconds and 3.6 seconds, alongside top speeds of 190mph and 178mph. Rear-wheel-drive, single-motor variants will deliver 671bhp.
