The Quest for the Perfect Family Vehicle: Cars That Can Fit Three Child Safety Seats
For parents, finding a vehicle that can safely accommodate three child safety seats across the backseat is a top priority. In our extensive Car Seat Checks, we’ve identified numerous vehicles that meet this critical requirement, including some unexpected models beyond minivans. Our editors have been conducting these tests for over a decade, ensuring that families have the information they need to make informed decisions.
Our Testing Methodology
To determine which vehicles can fit three car seats, we adjust the front seats to accommodate a 6-foot driver and a 5-foot-6-inch passenger. We then install three child seats – a high-back booster, a convertible car seat, and a rear-facing infant safety seat – in the second row using LATCH anchors or seat belts when necessary. The booster seat is positioned behind the driver’s seat, while the infant and convertible seats are installed behind the passenger seat. We also test installing the infant seat in the middle seat to ensure all configurations are safe and feasible.

Important Considerations
It’s worth noting that while we’ve identified these vehicles as capable of fitting three car seats, the fit may not always be perfect. In some cases, the seats may be snug, and narrower car seats might fit better. Additionally, the presence of a third row can affect the installation configuration.
Our editors, including Jennifer Geiger and Jennifer Newman, who are certified child-safety seat installation technicians, conduct these tests with precision and attention to safety.
