A commercial van crashed into a traffic light at the intersection of Nesmith and East Merrimack streets in Lowell on Friday, March 28, 2025, at approximately 2:30 p.m. The collision caused the traffic light pole to topple, and the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.
The van, traveling on Nesmith Street, came to rest on the pedestrian island within the intersection. The vehicle’s front end sustained significant damage from the collision, and the airbags deployed. The traffic light was severed and lay on the ground in front of the van.

According to the Lowell Police, the driver was unconscious when first responders arrived but was later transported to a local hospital with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening. An investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.
The van was identified as belonging to ‘National Seating & Mobility,’ a company that specializes in products for individuals with physical challenges. Attempts to contact the company for comment were unsuccessful.
A resident who lives at the intersection expressed concern about the area’s safety, noting that the yield sign near the pedestrian island is often ignored by drivers. The inbound lane of East Merrimack Street was temporarily closed for cleanup but reopened at approximately 3:45 p.m.
The incident highlights the importance of road safety and the potential consequences of traffic accidents in urban areas.
