The Deepal EO7 is making waves as a large SUV that doubles as a pickup truck, or ‘ute,’ as they say in Australia, where the car is slated to launch. I had the opportunity to experience it firsthand at Everything Electric Sydney, the city’s premier EV and electrification show.
The EO7 originally launched in China in late 2024 and then in Thailand. The starting price was CN¥199,900 (approximately $27,500 / £22,000 / AU$44,000), but the final cost could be higher in other markets.
In many ways, the EO7 presents a more realistic take on the Cybertruck concept. Its design favors a more traditional aesthetic, complemented by a luxurious interior that sets it apart. The rear glass, covering the tray, gives it a large sedan feel, but when retracted, it transforms into a pickup truck.

This vehicle isn’t a direct competitor to the Ford F-150 or Toyota HiLux. It offers a premium interior, a comfortable on-road experience, and functionality more akin to large SUVs without a third row. Its weight is also greater than a Ford Ranger due to its larger battery.
“This is a multi-versatile vehicle,” Cormac Cafolla, Deepal Australia general manager, told TechRadar. “You can use it for anything from weekend trips to Ikea or Bunnings, or for camping. The front seats also fold flat, allowing you to configure the car to your needs.”
Deepal EO7 Specifications

- Weight: 2230kg (RWD), 2398kg (AWD)
- Range (manufacturer claimed): 560km (RWD), 520km (AWD)
- Storage capacity: 638L (boot/tray), 1,860L (with rear row folded)
- Charging capacity: 7kW AC, 240kW DC (TBC)
- Wheels: 20-inch, 21-inch

Additional features include a wall socket outlet and tie-down points in the tub. The tray door can fold down for increased storage. There are no plans to include a spare tire in the Australian model.
While the towing capacity and exact range figures are still pending, the AWD model is expected to accelerate from 0-100km/h in just four seconds.

The Australian model will not feature the scrolling light bar seen in other markets; it has been replaced with a static panel to comply with local design regulations. “We’ve softened it with a horizontal light bar on the front, so we don’t lose the front visual representation of the vehicle,” Cafolla added. A badge will also be added before the car launches in Australia later this year.
Driving Experience
Deepal offered test drives of the EO7 at Everything Electric Sydney, allowing attendees to drive it around Sydney Olympic Park. The drive experience is similar to other large electric SUVs, with a smooth start-and-stop function. The 15.4-inch touchscreen, which actuates in the driver’s direction, can be disabled to face either the front passenger or remain neutral.
The operating system is quick and responsive. Acceleration is strong, and the turning circle is impressive for its size. The seats seemed comfortable, and the tan color scheme looked very nice. Other colors will likely be available.

It feels nimble and reactive on the road.
The cover over the tray can be lifted above the car’s roof racks via a button in the back or through the operating system. A button also lowers the dividing glass between the tray and the back seats, giving you full storage access between the tray and the back seats. This setup allows you to effectively switch between a single or a dual cab ute.
This design also allows you to drive with the rear window open, something that wouldn’t be possible in a gasoline vehicle due to the risk of exhaust fumes being drawn into the cabin.
Finally, the car has a ‘Sentry Mode’ security system, similar to Tesla’s, to protect against break-ins or vandalism. TechRadar contacted Inchscape Australia regarding the feature’s confirmation for the Australian model, and they replied that the technical specs would be “revealed in due course.”
Overall, the Deepal EO7 is an intriguing vehicle, suitable for those seeking space but prioritizing a comfortable interior and a ‘big car’ feel while maintaining the option to transport large items. My time with this car has me excited about its upcoming arrival.
