Delhi’s New EV Policy Targets 95% Electric Vehicles by 2027

The Delhi government has unveiled an ambitious electric vehicle (EV) policy aiming to make 95% of all new vehicle registrations electric by 2027. The comprehensive plan includes developing over 20,000 jobs through the establishment of EV charging stations and support services across the city. This initiative is part of a broader effort to reduce air pollution and promote cleaner transportation options.

    Current EV Infrastructure

Delhi currently boasts over 4,646 charging points and 250 battery swapping stations across more than 50 locations. This existing infrastructure provides a solid foundation for the new policy, which aims to further expand charging capabilities to alleviate ‘range anxiety’ – a significant concern for potential EV buyers.

    Incentives for EV Adoption

The policy, initially launched in 2020 and extended until July 2025, offers substantial financial incentives to encourage EV purchases:

    • Up to ₹5,500 discount on e-cycles
    • ₹30,000 discount on e-rickshaws and e-carts
    • ₹5,000 per kWh (up to ₹30,000) for electric two-wheelers
    • ₹30,000 discount on electric light commercial vehicles

These incentives aim to make EVs more affordable and attractive to consumers, supporting the government’s ambitious adoption targets.

    Future Plans and Existing Infrastructure

By 2030, the plan is to have comprehensive charging infrastructure in place, making EV ownership more practical for residents. While the initial draft suggested phasing out CNG and fuel-powered vehicles, Transport Minister Pankaj Singh has clarified that there are currently no plans to enforce such measures.
