Drivers Warned of Potential Risks with New Car AI Technology
Motorists could face safety risks due to an “over-reliance on AI” in modern vehicles, a leading expert has warned.
Ved Sen, Head of Innovation at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), cautions that as AI becomes more prevalent in petrol, diesel, and electric vehicles, drivers might become overly reliant on the technology. This could create a significant issue if the technology fails or malfunctions.

In an exclusive interview with Express.co.uk, Sen explained, “With any AI technologies, there are some standard risks.” These include the potential for “explainability, bias, errors (false positives and false negatives), unintended consequences, and in the case of generative AI, hallucination.”
He added, “There is also a transitional risk – where over-reliance on AI could be a problem for a period. Almost all of these should be issues for the automotive industry to a greater or lesser extent.”
While acknowledging these risks, Sen also emphasized the potential benefits of the technology, stating that AI could make roads safer and boost sustainability. This includes reducing accidents and improving the management of car functions, such as battery use in electric vehicles.

Sen told Express.co.uk, “This innovation in development is about creating a safer and more sustainable driving experience and in doing so, the future of mobility will likely be more enjoyable for the driver.” He noted that AI and automation make it easier to access driving information and communicate with the wider world.
“The car collects and analyses data so that not only are drivers more informed about hazards around them, but they are also more likely to be aware of what other cars and drivers around them are doing.”
