DS No8: Electric-Only Flagship Could Get Combustion Option
DS’s new electric-only flagship, the No8 coupé-SUV, might be considered for a hybrid powertrain option if market demand is sufficient. The No8 is currently the only car based on Stellantis’s new STLA Medium architecture to be offered exclusively with electric power. However, DS future products boss Cyprien Laurentie stated that adding a combustion option remains a technical possibility.
The No8 boasts a maximum range of 466 miles, which Laurentie believes makes it an ideal choice for both commuting and traveling without significant compromise. He emphasized that most EV skeptics “have never tried” an electric car and suggested that the company needs to find ways to encourage them to experience the technology. While DS is prepared to adapt if the No8’s uptake falters due to its singular powertrain offering, Laurentie noted that the company will closely monitor market response.
The No8 shares its STLA Medium platform with other models like the Citroën C5 Aircross, Peugeot 3008, and Vauxhall Grandland, which are available with mild-hybrid petrol power or plug-in hybrid systems. Laurentie highlighted the No8’s advantages, saying, “If you are a bit open-minded, you have no real compromise here… it’s perfect for commuting and travelling.” Previous DS sibling brands have launched EV-exclusive models before later adding internal combustion engine (ICE) options to boost demand.
