Five Three-Row EVs for Families
Most electric vehicles on the market are designed for five passengers, typically sedans or SUVs. However, automakers are expanding their electric vehicle (EV) lineups to include three-row models that can accommodate larger families. These EVs offer seating for six or seven passengers, ample cargo space, and driving ranges often exceeding 300 miles. They also come equipped with numerous advanced safety features.
The experts at Edmunds have compiled a list of five top-rated three-row EVs, ordered from most affordable to least. All prices include destination charges.
Kia EV9
The Kia EV9 is Edmunds’ favorite among electric SUVs and is the most affordable option on this list. It boasts numerous safety features, a comfortable ride, and spacious interiors across all three rows. The EV9 also charges quickly at powerful fast-charging stations, making it ideal for road trips. Additionally, it can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
While the base EV9 Light trim has an attractive starting price, it lacks sufficient power and range. Edmunds recommends the mid-range EV9 Wind trim instead, which offers more power, an EPA-estimated 280 miles of range, and all-wheel drive for enhanced traction in various weather conditions.
2025 EV9 Starting Price: $56,395
Hyundai Ioniq 9
The Hyundai Ioniq 9 is Hyundai’s newest electric SUV, offering a sleek, futuristic design while meeting the needs of families. It’s essentially an electric counterpart to Hyundai’s highly-rated Palisade. Like the Kia EV9, it provides luxury-level comfort, spacious seating, numerous standard safety features, and fast charging.
The Ioniq 9 stands out with its longer maximum range of 335 miles, even in the base S model. All other models offer over 300 miles of range, surpassing the EV9. The top-of-the-line Calligraphy Design model features a fingerprint scanner that personalizes settings and starts the vehicle.
2026 Ioniq 9 Starting Price: $60,555
Volkswagen ID. Buzz
For those seeking a unique alternative to mainstream SUVs, the Volkswagen ID. Buzz is an electric minivan with retro styling reminiscent of the classic VW Bus. Despite its quirky design, it offers a spacious interior with ample headroom and legroom across all three rows. The tall, boxy body provides generous cargo space, comparable to minivans and large SUVs.
The ID. Buzz comes standard with advanced safety features, but its maximum driving range of 234 miles may limit its appeal for long-distance driving.
2025 ID. Buzz Starting Price: $61,545
Rivian R1S
The Rivian R1S is an electric luxury SUV from the relatively new American EV manufacturer Rivian. Launched in 2022, it was one of the first three-row electric SUVs and remains a compelling choice, albeit at a higher price point. Rivian continues to make improvements to the R1S annually.
The 2025 R1S offers various configurations, including versions with a long range of up to 410 miles and performance models with 1,025 horsepower. It features height-adjustable air suspension for off-roading and offers ample passenger and cargo space, a premium interior, and numerous standard advanced safety features.
2025 R1S Starting Price: $77,700
Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV
The Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV is ideal for those seeking a family-friendly EV with a genuine luxury experience. It impresses with its smooth ride, premium cabin design, and extensive list of standard tech and safety features. The base 450+ model has an EPA-estimated range of 323 miles, with Edmunds’ independent test showing it can go 407 miles on a full charge.
However, the third-row seat is optional and less spacious than other models on this list. The EQS SUV’s price is also a consideration.
2025 EQS SUV Starting Price: $106,400
Edmunds notes that these SUVs represent most of the available electric three-row options in today’s market, all of which are excellent choices for families seeking space, range, and advanced safety features.
