SINGAPORE – A 43-year-old man is facing charges for allegedly driving his van at 132km/h along the Pan Island Expressway (PIE) on April 13, exceeding the speed limit by more than 60km/h. He is among eight motorists expected to be charged in court on June 17 for similar offences, according to a police statement on June 16.
The eight drivers allegedly exceeded speed limits by more than 40km/h. Two of them, including the van driver, were reportedly more than 60km/h over the limit. A 56-year-old driver allegedly reached 120km/h on Sheares Avenue, double the speed limit, on March 30.
Seven of the alleged offences occurred in March and April 2025, while one took place on December 28, 2024. The drivers face charges for speeding, which carries penalties of up to $1,000 in fines, three months in jail, or both. Repeat offenders may face fines up to $2,000, six months in jail, or both, and potential disqualification from driving.
Speeding remains a significant contributor to road accidents in Singapore. In 2024, traffic accidents reached a five-year high in terms of fatalities and injuries, with speeding contributing to one in three fatal crashes. To combat this, the police have announced harsher penalties for speeding offences starting from January 1, 2026, including increased composition sums and demerit points.
“The traffic police will continue to take firm enforcement action against motorists who speed and put the lives of road users at risk,” the police stated, emphasizing their commitment to road safety.
