A passenger involved in a two-vehicle collision on State Route 56 in Iron County, Utah, died in the hospital following the Tuesday evening crash. The incident, reported just after 7 p.m., occurred at the intersection of SR-56 and Iron Springs Road, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Cameron Roden told St. George News.
Emergency responders, including an Intermountain Life Flight helicopter, were dispatched to the scene shortly after receiving the call. The crash involved a Toyota pickup truck driven by a man in his 30s and a Dodge pickup truck occupied by an 80-year-old driver and an older female passenger, according to Roden.
At the time of the accident, the Toyota was stopped at the intersection of Iron Springs Road and SR-56. The Dodge was traveling west on SR-56. As the driver of the Toyota attempted to turn left onto the highway, heading east, it crossed paths with the westbound Dodge, resulting in an off-center, head-on collision.
“The front driver’s side of the Toyota struck the front passenger’s side of the Dodge, so the two vehicles were almost perpendicular during impact,” Roden explained. The elderly passenger in the Dodge was transported to a hospital in critical condition via Life Flight. The driver of the Dodge sustained minor injuries and was also taken to a hospital. The driver of the Toyota received treatment at the scene for minor injuries.
Unfortunately, the elderly passenger succumbed to their injuries and died at the hospital, Roden confirmed in a text message to St. George News on Wednesday morning. The crash remains under investigation.
The Utah Highway Patrol took the lead in the investigation, with assistance from the Iron County Sheriff’s Office, the Cedar City Police Department, the Cedar City Fire Department, and Intermountain Life Flight.
