A fire in a Mountain View parking lot Thursday afternoon was caused by an electric vehicle’s charging system, according to the fire department. The blaze broke out just before 5 p.m. in a parking lot along the 1300 block of Shorebird Way. Responding firefighters found a Jeep Wrangler EV and three other nearby cars on fire. After extinguishing the flames, investigators determined that the fire started in the Jeep Wrangler due to its lithium-ion battery charging system. The estimated damage to the four vehicles and the electrical charging station was $275,000. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The incident highlights concerns about the safety of electric vehicles and their charging systems.
