GILBERTSVILLE, Pa. – Emergency services in Gilbertsville faced an unprecedented situation Saturday evening when they responded to a motorcycle accident involving an electric vehicle.
According to Montgomery County Communications, the collision occurred around 7:07 p.m. at the intersection of Philadelphia Avenue (Route 73) and Elm Street in Douglas Township. The accident involved an SUV and a motorcycle.
The Gilbertsville Fire Department reported that this incident marked the first time they had employed a specialized plug to disconnect the power supply of an electric vehicle following an accident. Traditionally, in any motor vehicle accident, emergency responders disconnect the battery to mitigate potential hazards for both victims and first responders. This standard practice helps to stabilize the vehicle and minimize risks.
Authorities confirmed that the motorcyclist, a male, was transported to a local hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening. Both the motorcycle and the SUV were subsequently towed from the scene.
