Driving into the Future: Understanding Electric Vehicle Options
As the electric vehicle (EV) revolution continues to gain momentum, potential buyers are faced with various options, primarily between Battery EVs and Hybrid EVs. Our ‘Driving into the Future’ series, launching this week, aims to explore the future of driving, covering options, advancements, costs, servicing, and more over the next year.
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs)
Battery EVs are cars completely powered by electricity. They need to be charged and can be driven until their battery is depleted, similar to how a cell phone operates. Dan Reed from the Community College of Philadelphia’s Automotive Technology Program explains that the range of these vehicles varies significantly, from around 100 miles to over 300 miles on a single charge. This means some drivers might be able to go two or three days without needing to recharge, depending on the vehicle’s range.
Hybrid Electric Vehicles
For those concerned about the range limitations of Battery EVs, Hybrid EVs offer a bridge to new technology. These vehicles combine a gas engine with an electric motor, automatically switching between the two energy sources. Typically, hybrids can propel the vehicle up to 20-30 miles per hour on electric power alone before switching to the gas engine as needed. The gas engine also charges the electric battery onboard.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles
Another option available is the plug-in hybrid, which allows drivers to use electricity as the primary power source and then switch to the gas engine. These vehicles need to be plugged into a power source to recharge their batteries. Mike Gempp, director of the Philadelphia Auto Show, notes that the gas engine in plug-in hybrids provides backup for longer trips, such as family vacations.
The Future of Electric Vehicles
The landscape of electric vehicles is rapidly evolving, with emerging technologies like solar engines and hydrogen fuel cells on the horizon. Over the next 52 weeks, our ‘Driving into the Future’ series will delve deeper into these advancements, providing viewers with the information needed to make informed decisions about their driving future.

As we explore the various aspects of electric vehicles, it’s clear that the future of driving is becoming increasingly diverse, offering consumers a range of choices to suit their needs and preferences.
