Fact Check: Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Luxury Car Purchase Claim Debunked
A video circulating on social media alleges that Delhi’s new Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, bought a ₹50 lakh luxury car soon after assuming office, paid for by taxpayer funds. The video also suggests that Gupta, who previously criticized Arvind Kejriwal’s residence, has begun using expensive government resources. NewsMobile’s fact check reveals this claim to be misleading.
The video, shared on Facebook with a caption in Hindi implying the purchase of a new vehicle, prompted a closer look. The original video was posted on February 20, 2025, by the news agency IANS, showing security personnel arriving with the vehicle to pick up Rekha Gupta before her oath-taking ceremony. However, upon closer inspection, evidence indicates the car is not newly acquired.
Several social media users pointed out that the black car, bearing the registration number DL11CM0001, had been part of the Delhi CM’s official fleet for years. They shared older videos showing Arvind Kejriwal using the same vehicle. Furthermore, Atishi Marlena also used the same car during her brief tenure as Delhi CM.

A check of the vehicle’s registration details via the RTO Vehicle Information website revealed that the MG Gloster was registered on April 22, 2022, proving it was not purchased after Rekha Gupta took office. Reports from July 2022, based on an RTI inquiry, confirmed that the Delhi government had spent ₹1.44 crore on official vehicles for the CM’s fleet. Around that time, Kejriwal was seen in a new MG Gloster worth ₹36 lakh, which is the same vehicle now being used by Gupta.
Therefore, the allegation that Rekha Gupta bought a new luxury car is false. The MG Gloster seen in the video is a pre-existing government vehicle used by previous Chief Ministers, including Arvind Kejriwal and Atishi Marlena.
