If you’re in the market for a premium electric SUV, the BMW iX has long been a top contender. Now, with a mid-life refresh, the iX boasts increased power, extended range, and subtle design enhancements. We had the opportunity to test drive the updated model and assess whether the best has truly gotten better.

The iX immediately sets a high bar for competitors like the Mercedes EQE SUV and Audi Q8 e-tron. The enhancements simply elevate the iX further.
One aspect that continues to divide opinion is the iX’s distinctive design. The updated model retains its characteristic aesthetic, with sharper headlights and the familiar ‘buck-toothed’ grille – now offered with illuminated edging on certain trims. However, the core design remains the same. The interior, however, remains a strong point for the iX.

The cabin feels like something from a concept car, featuring a prominent twin-screen setup on the dashboard and a multi-layered center console between the front seats. Material quality is exceptional, and the seats are spacious and comfortable. The M Sport trim offers a new seat design that provides enhanced support. Passengers enjoy ample space, and generous windows create an airy atmosphere. The only compromise is the boot, which, at 500 liters, is adequate, but smaller than some rivals.
Underneath the surface enhancements lie more substantial improvements. The updated iX features larger batteries across the range and more efficient motors, resulting in increased range. The xDrive60 model now offers up to 426 miles, which places the iX at the forefront of electric vehicle range in the UK. Charging speeds should have also increased. Furthermore, the iX’s sporty feel will feel enhanced, with even the entry-level xDrive45 variant experiencing all-wheel drive grip and strong acceleration. While the iX is a large and heavy vehicle, it handles corners very capably and absorbs bumps with limo-like smoothness, making it a comfortable cruiser.

For those desiring serious performance, the M70 variant offers a staggering 659hp and blistering acceleration. For many, however, the entry-level model may be the wiser choice. Priced just under £75,000, the base model represents an excellent value, delivering a useful range of 374 miles, impressive performance, and the luxury amenities available throughout the iX range.
