First International Drive: BMW iX xDrive45
BMW’s latest all-electric SUV, the iX xDrive45, is poised to shake up the Australian market. This model is a significant step forward for the brand, offering upgrades in performance, range, and design.
Performance and Efficiency
One of the most notable changes in the new iX xDrive45 is the performance boost. With a power output of 300kW and 700Nm of torque, the SUV accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.1 seconds, a full second faster than its predecessor. While not the fastest in its class, the iX xDrive45 delivers impressive acceleration for its size.
Range is also a key improvement. The iX xDrive45 now boasts a 98.4kWh battery and enhanced efficiency, allowing for a driving range of up to 602km (WLTP) on a single charge. This is a significant increase from the previous model’s 436km. This increase of nearly 40% puts it in good stead against competitors.
Charging has received an upgrade, with DC fast charging now capable of 175kW. BMW has also integrated silicon carbide semiconductor components for the first time in an EV, further improving energy efficiency.
Driving Experience
On the road, the iX xDrive45 offers a balanced driving experience, blending comfort with agile handling. The suspension effectively absorbs road imperfections. Despite its size, the SUV handles well in corners, remaining composed and confident whether on coastal roads or winding back roads. The instant power delivery makes overtaking and merging seamless. The combination of luxury, design, safety, efficiency, and price makes this vehicle stand out.
Design and Features
The iX xDrive45 features a bold exterior design, highlighted by the BMW Kidney Iconic Glow grille with contour lighting and redesigned adaptive LED headlights. The Australian-delivered iX xDrive45 M Sport variants will feature this grille as standard. Standard features include 21-inch aerodynamic alloy wheels, with options for designs ranging from 21 to 23 inches, all equipped with a tyre pressure monitoring system. The M Sport package is standard and features an M leather steering wheel, a two-tone instrument panel, Dark Silver trim finishers, and M pedals.
Inside, the cabin includes M multifunctional sports seats, a panoramic glass roof (previously optional), heated front seats, and a heated steering wheel. Premium materials create a comfortable and inviting space. New paint options, such as Dune Grey metallic and Tanzanite Blue metallic, are also available. The BMW cockpit features the latest operating system 8.5 and includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Verdict
At $142,900, the iX xDrive45 M Sport is not cheap, but it provides a perfect blend of luxury and technology, with more power, range, and sharper design. It really is one of the most interesting SUVs that has been driven. This isn’t just another electric SUV, this is one to consider.
