The Rising Cost of Ford’s Compact Truck

The Ford Maverick has been a surprise success since its 2022 debut, appealing to buyers with its car-like comfort, compact size, and functional bed at a competitive price. In 2024 alone, it shipped over 110,000 units. However, its pricing has gradually increased since its introduction.

    Price Comparison

When the Maverick first launched, the base price was $22,490 for the 2022 model. In contrast, the 2025 entry-level XL trim now starts at $30,535, including a $1,695 destination charge and $695 acquisition fee. Higher trims can exceed $40,000, entering the price territory of the Honda Ridgeline.

    Honda Ridgeline: A Viable Alternative

The Honda Ridgeline starts at $41,600, including a $1,450 destination fee. For this price, it offers several advantages over the Maverick:

    • More useful bed with lockable under-bed storage and dual-opening tailgate
    • Higher towing capacity of 5,000 pounds (1,000 pounds more than Maverick with 4K Towing package)
    • Proven 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque
    • More spacious interior with greater seating capacity

    Performance and Capability

While the Ridgeline lacks a hybrid powertrain option, its naturally aspirated V6 engine provides smooth and responsive power delivery. This makes it suitable for both city driving and weekend adventures. The Ridgeline’s engine produces 30 more horsepower than the Maverick’s 2.0 EcoBoost engine, although it’s slightly down on torque.

    Interior Comfort and Features

The Honda Ridgeline edges out the Maverick in terms of interior comfort and space. Reviewers have found the Ridgeline to be quieter and more comfortable overall. It also offers more seating space and comes better equipped at the base level, with features like keyless ignition, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and tri-zone automatic climate control.

    Conclusion

While the Ford Maverick remains a great truck, particularly with its improved 13.2-inch touchscreen display and better fuel economy, the Honda Ridgeline offers significant advantages in terms of capability, comfort, and features at a comparable price point. As the Maverick’s price continues to rise, the Ridgeline becomes an increasingly appealing alternative for those seeking a compact truck with more power, space, and utility.
