Ford Refines EV Strategy and Boosts Manufacturing Capacity

Ford Motor Company is adjusting its strategy to meet the evolving needs of the automotive market, focusing on both electric vehicle (EV) development and expanding its hybrid vehicle offerings. This involves re-timing the launch of certain EV models, while simultaneously expanding manufacturing capabilities across North America.

Ford is committed to creating a diverse lineup of vehicles, offering consumers a balanced selection of gas, hybrid, and fully electric options. The company is strategically investing in various programs to achieve this diversification and adapt to consumer demand.

Ford’s commitment extends to scaling its profitable EV business. In the first quarter of 2024, Ford’s EV sales experienced an 86% increase, and hybrid sales increased by 42% compared to last year, demonstrating a strong market interest. Jim Farley, Ford’s president and CEO, emphasized the company’s commitment to providing the right mix of vehicles and delivering advanced, software-enabled EVs.

    Oakville Assembly Plant Timeline

The transformation of Ford’s Oakville Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada, is slated to begin in the second quarter of this year. This facility will be converted from a gas vehicle production site into an EV manufacturing complex. The launch of its all-new three-row electric vehicles, however, has been rescheduled to 2027, from the previously planned 2025.

This adjustment allows Ford to capitalize on advancements in battery technology and to observe the growth of the market segment. The goal is to deliver increased durability and enhanced value to customers. Ford recognizes that this change has an impact, and the company is working with Unifor to support affected employees.

    BlueOval City Progress

Construction is progressing at BlueOval City, Ford’s advanced auto production complex in Tennessee, which includes the Tennessee Electric Vehicle Center assembly plant. The installation of equipment at the facility is underway, including stamping equipment for producing sheet metal for Ford’s upcoming electric truck.

Ford is anticipating customer deliveries of the new truck in 2026, with a gradual increase in production to ensure quality. The Tennessee Electric Vehicle Center is designed as an Industry 4.0 plant, incorporating automation and connectivity to boost efficiency and quality. The plant plans to start offering community members virtual reality simulations at the Discovery Center.

    Ohio Assembly Plant Expansion

Ford is expanding its Ohio Assembly Plant to manufacture an all-new electric commercial vehicle for Ford Pro customers. The construction of the facility is well underway with the steel framework and interior elements progressing. Tool installation is expected to begin in spring 2025.

    The Future of Ford EVs

Ford is also investing in the development of future generations of EVs. A skunkworks team in California is working on a smaller, more affordable, and flexible EV platform capable of underpinning a range of vehicles. Construction is also happening at BlueOval Battery Park Michigan, and the BlueOval SK plants in Tennessee and Kentucky.
