Forest Grove Man Sentenced in Car Window Shooting Case
FOREST GROVE, Ore. — A Forest Grove man has been sentenced to prison after a series of incidents in which he used a slingshot to damage car windows. Caleb Logan Spurlock, 28, pleaded guilty to four counts of first-degree criminal mischief and three counts of unlawful use of a weapon.
Washington County Circuit Court Judge Kathleen Proctor handed down a sentence of 22 months in prison for Spurlock on February 24th. He must also pay over $77,000 in restitution and serve two years of post-prison supervision.
Spurlock’s arrest followed an investigation by Forest Grove police, which began in October 2023. Numerous reports detailed vehicle windows being shot out with projectiles that included BBs and metal ball bearings. The Washington County District Attorney’s Office stated that Spurlock’s actions occurred between October 2023 and May 2024.
Spurlock, while riding an electric scooter, used a “sophisticated” slingshot loaded with metal ball bearings near Pacific Avenue. His residence was a mile away. Fourteen victims reported their cars were hit while driving, including an off-duty Washington County Sheriff’s Office detective. Many drivers found metal ball bearings in their vehicles or were injured by shattered glass.
After installing surveillance cameras, police captured Spurlock on camera, riding his electric scooter and firing at passing vehicles. During his arrest, authorities recovered an electric scooter, a slingshot, and a box filled with metal ball bearings.
The Washington County District Attorney’s Office added that Spurlock caused approximately $68,000 in damage to 21 vehicles at a Forest Grove car dealership between February 9th and 11th. Spurlock had previously been employed at the dealership. Surveillance footage at the dealership showed Spurlock smashing car windows and leaving the scene on his electric scooter.
