Geely EX5 Kicks Off Australian Launch with a Sharply Priced Electric SUV
Geely Auto has entered the Australian market with the EX5 family SUV, launching with an aggressively competitive price that undercuts rivals like the Tesla Model Y and Toyota RAV4. The entry-level “Complete” trim is priced at a surprisingly low $40,990 (before on-road costs), aiming to make a significant impact in the electric vehicle (EV) market.
This announcement follows initial previews of the vehicle in February. The final price represents a further reduction from earlier figures, which were around $43,490 (before on-road costs), according to industry sources.
To strengthen the offer, Geely is backing the EX5 with a seven-year, unlimited-kilometer warranty in Australia. The launch includes a year of complimentary Evie public charging, three years of scheduled servicing (valued at approximately $1500), free premium paint, and home charger installation. This package is available until April 30.
Geely has ambitious plans to become a top-ten automotive brand in Australia. The company also plans to unveil another larger model in the near future, with a goal of introducing six new vehicles over the next three years, not all of which will be fully electric.
Compared to competitors, the EX5 boasts a very attractive starting price, even when compared to the more premium “Inspire” trim. Here’s how the “Complete” configuration compares to similar offerings on the market:
- BYD Atto 3 Standard Range — $39,990
- Geely EX5 Complete — $40,990
- Leapmotor C10 — $47,500 (drive-away)
- Deepal S07 RWD — $53,900
- Hyundai Kona Electric SR — $54,000
- Xpeng G6 SR — $54,800
- Kia EV5 Air SR — $56,770
- Tesla Model Y RWD — $63,400
The sharp price of the Geely EX5 positions it competitively with both traditional internal combustion engine (ICE) SUVs and hybrid models, such as the Toyota RAV4 Cruiser 2WD hybrid ($51,410, before on-road costs).
For this price, the EX5 Inspire offers a single 160kW/320Nm front motor, a 60.22kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, providing a driving range of 430km. It also has the capacity for 100kW DC fast-charging, allowing the battery to be charged from 20% to 80% in just 28 minutes.
